How to govern n8n
Self-hosted automations and AI agents chaining actions across your systems, often on a schedule.

No governance change Reviewed releases 2.38.1 to 2.43. The n8n Assistant can now drive a browser for all users, with an instance-level switch that defaults to on, and can reach a Supabase MCP server. New nodes write to Microsoft Dataverse and Teams, Confluence works as an agent tool, agents can run sub-agents, and Atlassian service-account credentials keep working after a person leaves. The recorded defaults already treat n8n workflows as changing records without review; the browser capability sits in the builder assistant, not in running workflows. Full changelog ↓How n8n is used
We see one common way businesses use n8n, and we govern it on its own terms. If your team uses it differently, that is fine: you describe the use in your own words and Certrak works out the governance from what it actually does.
Workflow automation across systems
Consequence to people: MediumAutomating tasks across business systems - triggers, data movement, decisions in workflows
Governing n8n in practice
- Name one person who owns n8n in your business. Governance starts with a name.
- Write down what n8n is used for. Certrak recognises one common use: Workflow automation across systems. Yours may differ; write down yours.
- Decide what n8n may and may not be given. Internal business information is in scope, so name what stays out.
- There is no human review of outputs. Decide whether that is acceptable for each use, and what would make you change it.
- n8n can create, change, or delete records in another system without a person approving. Record which of these you allow, and who can change that.
- Look at this again every month, and sooner on any of these: industry incidents, vendor model updates and autonomy level changes.
What changed, and how Certrak responded
We record every check here, including the ones that changed nothing. A check that found no governance change proves we looked.
